The Missing Wire Behind an Older Thermostat
A lot of the houses Laslar Tech Installs works in around Milledgeville and the rest of Middle Georgia were wired decades before a smart thermostat was ever a consideration, and the part that trips people up is the one they never see: the common wire, or C-wire, that a smart unit needs to keep itself powered around the clock. Plenty of older HVAC runs simply never included one.
Try to install a Nest or an Ecobee onto a system with no C-wire and no adapter, and the symptoms show up within days rather than at the wall. The unit short cycles the furnace or the air handler, drains its backup battery faster than it can recharge, or drops its Wi-Fi connection at random because it never has enough power to hold both the display and the radio on at once. It looks like a bad thermostat. It is almost always a wiring gap.

Checked at the System, Not Just the Wall Plate
Before anything gets mounted, the existing system gets checked at both ends, the wall plate and the equipment itself, to see what is actually available to work with. Where a common wire exists but was never used, it gets put into service. Where one was never run at all, a C-wire adapter goes in at the equipment side so the new thermostat gets steady power without an electrician pulling new low-voltage cable through a wall.
Once power is settled, the Nest or Ecobee goes on the wall, gets paired to the household's own phone, and the heating and cooling schedule gets built around how the house is actually used rather than left on a factory default. That last part matters as much as the wiring does; a schedule nobody understands gets overridden by hand within a week and stops saving anything.

Before the job is finished, someone in the household runs through the app and the schedule with us watching, not the other way around, so questions get answered while the tools are still out. That covers changing the schedule later, reading the energy history, and knowing which settings actually affect the bill.
