The Wall Rarely Agrees With the Mantel
Most of the calls that come in to Laslar Tech Installs for a TV mount in Milledgeville and the rest of Middle Georgia start over a fireplace, and a fireplace wall is almost never straightforward. The brick or block sitting behind the plaster puts the studs somewhere other than dead centre on the mantel, and a mantel that looks level to the eye rarely reads level once a laser is actually on it.
Left to a drywall anchor instead of a stud, a bracket carrying a 70 inch panel will start to walk over months, not years. The screen tips forward a few degrees, the anchors work loose in the gypsum, and the fix by then is a wall patch as well as a re-mount. Finding the real stud line before anything gets drilled is the difference between a mount that is fixed once and one that keeps getting revisited.

Levelled to the Ceiling, Not the Mantel
The bracket goes up levelled against the ceiling line rather than the mantel shelf underneath it, because the mantel is usually the part that is out of true. Height gets set by two things working together: the viewing angle from where you actually sit, and the heat coming off a working firebox, so the panel lands where it is comfortable to watch and far enough above the opening that the heat is not shortening its life.
Tilt is dialled in to the real seating in the room, not a factory default, and before the final screws go in the screen comes back off the wall once to dress the cable properly behind it. That one extra step is why the finished job has nothing hanging down the front of it.
